THEDAYTODAY #2

My chosen article for day two was about a robbery which took place in Leith, Edinburgh. A shopkeeper fought off the masked men, risking his life.

My first mindmap included key words directly from the article to get ideas flowing.
The keyword ‘disguise’ stuck out to me so I decided to work from this. I wrote out a few related words in this mindmap.
Following the idea of disguise, I started to make quick pieces resembling balaclavas.
I used masking tape, chalk, charcoal and ripped up paper to make these.
I experimented with 3D form using tinfoil to make a head and shoulders. I then used acrylic to paint on a balaclava. I didn’t like the end result so decided not to go further with this idea.
As eyes are one of the most recognisable feature of a persons face, I wanted to focus on them showing through the mask/balaclava.
I used materials such as tinfoil, acrylic, charcoal, chalk, and pen.
I experimented using wire to create the eyes of the balaclava.
I then experimented with layering over a drawing of eyes.
Using wire again, I made an outline of a balaclava in a continuous line technique.
I then made a second balaclava outline out of wire and used this layered over a chalk drawing of a man for my final piece.
Along the bottom of the piece I wrote ‘WHO ARE YOU?’ underneath ‘WHO AM I?’ in chalk. This relates to my theme of identity as well as disguise.
