THEDAYTODAY #3

Today’s work started with this international story – a hurricane in the Bahamas.
I was advised to not focus so much on planning, and to concentrate more on getting the work done and experimenting straight away in response to the article.
The masking tape shows some of the words I was inspired by from my mindmap above. Destruction, moment, and shape were very important in my work today.
I began by experimenting with circular shapes using different media. I used chalk, pen, acrylic and charcoal.
I enjoyed using string to show flow. I liked how this technique is slightly unpredictable.
More pieces experimenting with different media (wire+tinfoil), backgrounds, and brushstrokes.

Inspired by the key word ‘destruction’ I thought of how this could be transferred in my work. The following pictures show my piece before, during, and after destruction. I did this by stomping on the piece, kicking it, and rubbing my hands on it. I added broken chalk and charcoal to this too to add colour and texture. I loved this effect and thought it had a huge impact on my work. It’s definitely a process I’d like to use in future work.

Before.
During.

After.
This video shows the technique I used influenced by my them of destruction

As I was content with this technique, I wanted to make my final piece. The process of my work gradually increased in scale and consequently size became a big focus. I wanted the final piece to be a lot bigger. I used two pieces of paper stuck together.

Looking back, I think my work is highly influenced by Cy Twombly in his focus on texture and imperfect surfaces. His work is often done on old letters or scraps of paper – and my work shows similar aspects.

I found an dead flower which I glued to this piece to stick to my theme of destruction, and adding to the texture. (Inspired by Anslem Kiefer).
