THEDAYTODAY #5

Final project of the week!! Today’s article was written about an opera singer who was accused by many women of sexual assault. On my journey to college this morning, I was listening to a song very fond to me. The lyrics ‘I am not the only one’ stuck with me, and as soon as I read this article I was immediately inspired (and not to mention, very angry).

I wanted to challenge myself and not write any key words as planning. I went straight into making and was excited to see where my process took me. Although I found it difficult and had moments of doubt, I’m glad I went this way about it for the final day.

‘I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE’ taken directly from lyrics – I tried a different technique for each line e.g. left hand, continuous line, closing my eyes, and writing behind my back.
The numbers resemble how common sexual assault is, and the large amount of people who have been affected by such horrible acts. I used hot glue to write ‘I am not the only one’ and lightly brushed red acrylic paint over the letters to make them more visible.
‘Just Another’ resembles the commonality of sexual assault, as well as the stigma around telling your story.
I made a collage of people to represent the large amount of victims all over the world. The ’1’ is taken from the lyrics previously mentioned.
As I haven’t really used sculpture in my work to far, I took the opportunity to do so today. (Straws and masking tape).

Experimenting with angles, I then created drawings of the sculpture as seen below.

(Acrylic, pen, pencil, and tape).
I was inspired by the straight and repeated lines in my sculpture sketches, influencing this work.
This lead to experimenting further with different media and techniques to create more line pieces. My favourite technique was using acrylic on a straw as a stamp. I also liked the formatting of the three square pieces seen in the bottom left.
Straw used to make previous pieces mentioned above. +Words on paper and tape.
The middle of my final three pieces was created using the stamp technique. I liked the texture of the lettering.
