Part one of the #DAYTODAY project was to choose an article and create a response. The aim of this was to understand the development process.
Part two was to encourage further experimentation from the work made the week prior to engage in the process and production of contemporary art.
I decided to work on the subject matter from day four of part 1 which originated from an article about how millennials are the most likely to be victims of fraud. In part 2, I used the techniques including print and destruction, fitting with the mania theme from day four’s project.
A weakness I discovered very early in this project was my inclination to plan. This flawed my outcomes as it made it too literal and narrowed my direction – which I think is particularly obvious in the second day.
Time management only felt like an issue in the beginning as I felt unsure of how to go about the project. I spent too much time reading for the perfect article instead of just using whatever shouted out to me. Towards the end of the week, I was confident in getting straight to work to create an immediate response. I felt the days I did less planning, the better and larger amount of work I created as I had wider range of directions I could go in.
One weakness was that I used the same media for most of my projects, which made my work appear too similar. I tried to experiment a little with sculpture and video, yety processes still all felt very similar.
Some feedback I received during the week regarded the layout of my work and how that can affect the viewer. I had a large amount of development work all taped to the wall with little organisation, and my classmates commented that the space felt very manic. I decided to emphasise this by using any scraps of work to fill space and cover my wall.
When giving explaining my work to people, I felt as though I was trying too hard to explain my development rather than it being clear to see. It was then that I decided to use video for my final outcome as my other directions already felt exhausted.
The verbal feedback I received agreed that my work communicated my theme of mania well through colour and layout. My classmates also felt that my video was effective.
As my project featured the words ‘C’est La Manie’, I was questioned of its significance to my work. As it came from lyrics, I was told to think of how it would communicate to the viewer.
I was also asked to consider how I would install the work that I created – as an installation of all work, or just a few pieces, and how that would affect the overall atmosphere. This is very important as my intentional layout links to its theme.
Regarding video, I was told think about the following; How would I install my video to represent my theme? How could I use sound to emphasise/provoke emotion?
