DAMIEN TRAN – 2D CONTEXTUAL RESEARCH

French born, but is now based in Germany. Spends his time making posters for upcoming music shows. These mostly consist of collage work – using both colour and black and white. He also often works with screen printing. Tran’s work ranges in size and surface – from painting murals on buildings, to creating zines and book covers. He currently co-runs ‘Palefroi’, an art collective, with fellow print artist Marion Jdanoff.

Tran has also experimented with animations and moving images, seen below.

What first caught my eye about Damien Tran’s work was his use of words. It reminded me of my love for Cy Twombly’s work – and I wanted to research him further. I’m drawn to his use of line – the way it appears as if it has been scratched into the work itself. It looks heavy and ingrained, giving it a powerful atmosphere. I was also attracted to his use of colour – especially the dull and muted pastel colours of blue and pink in the pieces seen above.

I like the overlapping of what look like non precious scraps of paper that come together to make something more aesthetically pleasing.
