CONCEPTUAL PROJECT EVALUATION

The original theme for the Conceptual Project was Memory.  I began by developing from my 3D project which dealt with self-reflection and emotions. To incorporate this and the theme into the Conceptual Project, I focused on self-reflection and confessions through secrets and personal thoughts. I feel I was somewhat successful in demonstrating this in the beginning, but it was slightly lost as my work developed. Subsequently, I do not think my resolved work clearly reflects the theme of Memory as I’d like it to – although the theme did help me to further my work and I can see a coherent line of progress. Overall, I feel that the theme of Memory was meaningful in the evolution of my work – but it could have been more evident in my resolved pieces.

The materials used in this project had a huge impact on the development of my work. As I had begun to use embroidery half-way through the project, I was left after a 1to1 questioning the reason behind this. Using embroidery stemmed from its appearance as it was an easy way to obscure secrets by showing the reverse of the fabric. I however was only focusing on its aesthetic properties rather than thinking about the connotations that embroidery and fabric had. Because of this, I started to question the meaning behind the materials and subject matter used in art and its importance.

If I were to extend this project, I would be interested to hear people’s opinions on my resolved outcomes without context as this can create a totally different responce. It would be intriguing to find out how people would interpret my work. This could perhaps be executed in an interactive exhibition and/or through video or text.

Regarding presentation, I think I could have presented my work better as my Photoshop work and resolved pieces were not as polished as I would have liked them to be. I think this was down to time as my project changed direction very late on and embroidery is a very time-consuming way of working.

The artists I researched had a huge influence on my final outcome for this project. After my 1to1, I did research on artists and articles regarding the importance of context/meaning behind art. I came across an article about John Baldessari’s 2017 ‘Emoji Series’. In this article, Baldessari’s was asked the reason behind his choice of large scale to which he responded, “I just wondered what they’d look like.”.I used this quote for one of my resolved pieces.

I was very happy with how I was managing my time as I had put in a healthy amount of effort into development and was on track up until my unexpected change in direction which left me feeling overworked and rushed towards the end of the project.

I feel more intensive research could have helped me to improve how I approached the second half of my development process. I found it difficult to find articles which related to exactly what I was trying to explore – which made it harder for me to explain what I was trying to convey.
