Our next task on the brief was to create a minimum of 5 drawings within our daily environment that directly link to our chosen location (pictures above). As my location is pretty far away and I had limited time due to work commitments, I was not able to go to my chosen location. To compromise, I used materials from my garden which could also be found at the beach, such as plants, wood, and rocks.
I wanted to test myself to use natural and non man made materials when creating my drawings. For example, I used a rock and mud to scrape across the page. I also tried using a long stick as my ‘paintbrush’, influenced by Henri Matisse and Brice Marden as they sometimes used this method in their work. I think the following slideshow shows my most successful work from this task.
As mentioned before, I wasn’t able to get to my location so didn’t have all of the materials I would of liked. I had an idea to draw on to wooden planks, however I compromised by using wooden pegs and taping them together. I liked the different stains of wood giving the piece more character. The drawing itself was very simple, yet the surface made it more interesting.
As my location is at the beach, I thought about somehow using water in my work. I have a photograph which shows a landscape of the sea, but it appears very misty and dull. I thought drawing a simple outline of the water and sand, then covering it in water could represent this fogginess. However, I feel like it looks too messy and it was hard to document.
A big part of my attention was focused on the surfaces. As you can see in the following pictures, I have tried to draw parts location onto the face of a rock and leaf. These however were not successful as it is difficult to see the drawing itself. I do however like the vibrancy of colours on the leaf, and could maybe experiment with this idea more to create a more successful outcome.
