COLLAGE WORKSHOP #2

Todays collage workshop was a more relaxed day, beginning with a few short moving image films, including;
Ghosts before breakfast by Hans Richter (1927)
Broadway by Light – William Klein – (1958)
Joseph Cornell – Rose Hobart (1936) – A reassembly of 1931 film East of Borneo (1931)

We then had a look at our combined work in an Exquisite Corpse project. Here is my work, the body, creating using Microsoft Paint;

In the second half of todays workshop, the group then participated in an interactive video performance via a Zoom call. Although I didn’t take part, I enjoyed the calmness of watching the performance take place. The participants were to bring a blue, yellow, and red object, used to cover their camera. Split into four groups, each took turns to show their coloured objects, cover their camera using their hands, then remove themselves from the screen completely. Once edited, the video was presented, showing each instruction acted out. As there was no sound, it felt almost hypnotising as everyone took part in simple yet affective motions. Towards the end, everyone showed their isolated hand, creating shapes and flowing in the air. It was interesting to me how much power a single hand held, simply by the way each person moved. We are so used to talking to a person face to face, which can come with a variation of conscious thoughts – being aware of what they look like, how they act, what their eyes are doing, how they speak etc. Yet, exclusively having their hands speak for them created its own type of connection with the viewer.
